Frozen In: Two Lobster Boats Locked in Ice Off Orr’s Island

Two lobster boats — one owned by a father, the other by his son — came to be locked in place, with no way to move, by solid sea ice for much of the winter of 2025–26. It happened near the northeast tip of Orr’s Island, Maine. The boats, named Restless and Whiskey Girl, were on their usual year-round moorings when a vast sheet of thick ice formed, covering a large area between Orr’s Island, part of Great Island, and the High Head portion of Harpswell Neck.
It would be a long winter for the two fishermen, waiting for air and seawater temperatures to warm enough for the ice to break up and set the boats free. On January 29th, I flew my drone near the boats for the first time, and did so again over the following weeks to capture and edit this video, published February 26, 2026.
