By March 3rd, 2026, the lobster boats Restless and Whiskey Girl had been locked in ice for more than six weeks — it must have felt like an incredibly long winter for the two fishermen, a father and his son who each owned one of the boats. Most recent winters hadn’t produced the kind of solid, unyielding ice grip seen during the 2025–26 season.
Thankfully, by the first of March the ice had softened, and sometime in the late hours of the 2nd and early hours of the 3rd, the boats shifted from where they’d sat stationary for weeks. This video captures what took place on the afternoon of March 3rd, with weather conditions changing rapidly, as they so often do on the coast of Maine. The following day the boats were temporarily relocated, and within a short time both were back on their moorings.
