Bailey Island Bridge and Clouds

Known also as the Cribstone Bridge, due to the manner in which the supporting granite blocks are laid on top of one another, it is the only bridge of its kind in the world. It was thought a bridge of similar design existed in Scotland and was destroyed during World War II.

However, research conducted in 1974 while the bridge was under nomination by the National Register of Historic Places, along with later documentation in engineering society publications, attribute the design solely to native Maine engineer Llewelyn Edwards. The bridge was constructed in 1927-28 with granite blocks ferried by barge from quarries along a border between the towns of Pownal, ME, and Yarmouth, ME, a little over 13 miles away from the bridge site as a crow flies.
